No shipping rates on international orders, while domestic works fine
Adding a country to Markets makes your store sell there; it does not add that country to any shipping zone, and nothing warns you. That is the most common reason a Shopify store quotes shipping domestically and returns nothing for one country abroad. The failure is destination-specific, which is exactly why it survives for weeks: revenue looks normal, orders keep arriving from home, and the shoppers who see no way to pay do not write in. Two other causes produce the same symptom, and five minutes of testing tells all three apart.
The signature: domestic works, one country does not
This failure is destination-specific, which is exactly what makes it survive for weeks. Your domestic orders keep arriving, revenue looks normal, and a country you sell to quietly returns nothing. Nobody emails to say checkout is broken; they close the tab.
Three causes produce it, and they are distinguishable in about five minutes.
1. The country is in Markets but not in any shipping zone
Adding a country to Markets makes your store sell there. It does not add that country to a shipping zone, and the two screens do not warn each other. So the country is live, priced, translated, and has no way to be shipped to.
Settings → Markets, then Settings → Shipping and delivery → each profile → each zone
Compare the two lists literally, country by country. This is the single most common cause of “no rates for Germany only”.
2. The zone contains the country but defines no rate
A zone with a country in it and no active rate under it behaves exactly as though the country were absent. The country name is right there in the list, which is what makes it invisible: the screen looks configured.
3. A custom delivery profile covers fewer countries than your general one
Products on a custom profile are served only by that profile's zones. If the general profile ships to thirty countries and the custom one to five, every cart containing those products and heading to the other twenty-five gets nothing.
The tell is that it is both product-specific and destination-specific: the same country works for some products and not others. If that is what you are seeing, go straight to the profile.
The five-minute test
- Place a test order to the failing country with a product you know is on the general profile. If it works, the problem is a custom profile, cause 3.
- If it fails for every product, open the zone covering that country and confirm a rate exists under it, cause 2.
- If no zone covers that country at all, that is cause 1.
Use a real address in the destination country. Carrier-calculated rates validate addresses, and an invented one returns no rate for a reason that has nothing to do with your setup.
Not this, but worth knowing: duties, import taxes and restricted-item rules can block an order later in the flow without removing the shipping option. If a rate appears and the order still fails, you are past shipping configuration and into Markets and compliance.
Check the whole store instead of one setting
RateGuard reads your products, delivery profiles, zones, brackets and locations and names the specific setting that returns no rate at checkout. Read-only: it can see your shipping configuration and cannot change it, and it is never given customer or order data.
