A location that cannot fulfil online orders leaves checkout with no rate

RateGuard · Last checked 14 August 2026

Checkout only considers stock held at locations allowed to fulfil online orders, so if the only location holding a product cannot, there is nowhere to ship from and no shipping option appears. The inventory is visible in your admin the whole time, which is what makes this one confusing: the product is in stock, and checkout behaves as though it is not, without saying so. It shows up right after adding a second location, a retail store or a 3PL, and it has a signature that rules out every other cause in one look: the same product fails for every country, while other products are fine everywhere.

What the setting controls

Each location in your store has a switch for whether it can fulfil online orders. Checkout only considers stock held at locations where that switch is on. If the only location holding stock for a product cannot fulfil online orders, there is nowhere to ship the item from, and checkout returns no shipping option rather than an explanation.

Settings → Locations → the location → “Fulfil online orders”

When it happens

Almost always right after adding a second location, and the two common cases look different from the outside.

How to confirm it is this and not something else

The signature is product-specific and destination-independent: the same product fails for every country, while other products are fine everywhere. That rules out zones and delivery profiles, which fail by destination, and it points away from weight brackets, which fail by cart size.

  1. Open the product and look at where its inventory actually sits, per location.
  2. Open Settings → Locations and check the online-fulfilment switch for exactly those locations.
  3. If the only location with stock cannot fulfil online, that is the cause.

The fix, and the decision behind it

Two honest options, and they are not equivalent.

What you should not do is turn the switch on to make checkout work and leave the operational question for later, because the next order will be routed there.

Location priority is a different problem with the same symptom

If several locations can fulfil online, Shopify picks between them by its own routing rules. That decides which location ships, not whether a rate appears. If rates appear but orders keep landing at the wrong warehouse, you are looking at routing, not at this setting.

Check the whole store instead of one setting

RateGuard reads your products, delivery profiles, zones, brackets and locations and names the specific setting that returns no rate at checkout. Read-only: it can see your shipping configuration and cannot change it, and it is never given customer or order data.
